This job responds to assigned departmental maintenance needs and is responsible for the execution of repairs or replacement of affected equipment in assigned area. The General Mechanic must be familiar with a wide range of skilled crafts including, but not limited to, plumbing, electrical, HVAC-R and carpentry. The General Mechanic responds to and repairs specialty systems such as the nurse call system, fire alarm system, television system, medical gas system, and the ceiling system. The General Mechanic refers requests beyond the scope of this position to the Facilities Manager for distribution to a specialty mechanic. The General Mechanic uses hand and power tools necessary for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, carpentry and painting repairs.

Education

Required -High School diploma or equivalent

Work Experience
Required -5 years in maintenance experience; must be mechanically inclined including experience working with minimal supervision and multi-tasking. Experience using all hand tools and power tools required to properly perform job duties. Experience troubleshooting and problem-solving equipment issues.

Preferred- Healthcare experience

Certifications

Required -Valid driver's license from state of residence

Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Healthcare experience
  • Knowledge of electrical, plumbing, carpentry, heating/ventilation/air conditioning/refrigeration (HVAC-R).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Skills to read, write and understand schematic drawings, blueprints, specifications, etc. Have a will do attitude.

Job Duties

  • Shift Work: Must be able to work 10:30am - 7pm including rotating weekends and holidays
  • Performs general repairs and troubleshooting.
  • Performs daily maintenance inspections/repairs in assigned area.
  • Utilizes effective judgment and decision making skills when performing job duties
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Adheres to Ochsner's policies.
  • Completes Preventive Maintenance (PM) inspections according to schedule
  • Follows up on completed/current assignments.
