Job Summary:
Supports in-service operating systems to ensure continued day-to-day operation and maintenance and optimization throughout. Determines, selects, and implements technically feasible and economically viable alternatives for sustainment. Analyzes and evaluates how to improve a system and/or equipment's sustainability under continued operation, maintenance, and unexpected change. Develops design changes to resolve operational issues, introduces new materials and revises product, process and test specifications to enhance product quality, design integrity, reliability and manufacturability. Collects and evaluates service use and maintenance data; conducts root-cause analyses of in-service problems (e.g., operational hazards, deficiency reports, parts obsolescence, corrosion effects, reliability and maintainability trends, safety hazards, and failure causes and effects) and implements corrective action.

The Sr. Process Control Engineer reports to the Control Systems Engineering Supervisor and can be expected to fill in during his/her absence.

 

Roles AND Responsibilities:

  • Assists engineering leadership with control strategies through achieving and sustaining improvements in advanced process controls, loop tuning, inferential model development and maintainability, and complex PID (proportional integral derivative) loops.
  • Utilizes knowledge of DCS (distributed control system), PLCs (programmable logic controllers), SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition), instruments, analyzer, and process networks in process control configuration and implementation. Ensures adherence to corporate standards, guidelines and performance metrics to define, implement and promote optimal utilization and benefits of process control engineering solutions.
  • Provides support for all process control applications, maintenance, installation, migration, control loop management as well as steady state and dynamic models.
  • Support site coverage on weekends as part of team on-call roster
  • Supports configuration of process control technology versions and operator interfaces. Performs assessments of base layer (based on CPM) and assists with process control best practices network.
  • Mentors and trains process control engineers and Control Specialists
  • Provides support for site projects related to process control engineering.
  • Conducts feasibility and simulation studies evaluating economic value and impact of process controls engineering installations.
  • Influences sound process control project methods as well as capital projects support

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCES:

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering
  • Minimum 7 years of process control engineering experience
  • 10+years in processing industry experience, preferably from refining/petrochemical industry
  • Extensive knowledge in industry standards (ISA/IEC, etc)
  • Proven APC implementation and maintainability experience
  • Good track record of identifying and executing process optimization opportunities
  • Excellent command in subject domain to act as company rep in discussions with vendors and contractors
  • Safety systems and PLC programming experience is a plus
  • Prior experience with alarm management and rationalization a plus
  • Certifications preferred (ISA / IEC / Exida / TUV)
  • On-Call Rotation Required

 

COMPETENCIES:

  • Read and interpret control system related drawings, including Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), Loop Drawings, and other electrical schematics
  • Self-initiated, thinker who can accomplish problem solving in independent manner
  • Process Control Technical assurance authority, when needed, for peers as well as stakeholders
  • Develop/modify control narratives
  • Modify existing control logic for smooth and consistent operation
  • Effective team skills and ability to work with all levels of the organization
  • Proficient computer skills including MS Office Suite
  • Knowledge of networks (Ethernet, fiber, and serial)
  • Experience in troubleshooting instrumentation
